What are the types of Stage Curtain?
Each curtain plays a key role in shaping the visual and functional elements of a performance space:
- Main Traveler: a full-stage curtain that opens and closes horizontally, typically at the front of the stage. It serves as the primary curtain, concealing the stage before and between performances.
- Valance: a short horizontal curtain above the main drape, hiding rigging and creating a finished, framed look for the stage.
- Border: a wide but short curtain hung above the stage to mask lighting and rigging while helping define the stage height.
- Scrim: a lightweight, semi-transparent curtain that appears solid when lit from the front but becomes see-through when lit from behind, creating dramatic visual effects.
- Legs: tall, narrow curtains placed on the sides of the stage to hide backstage areas and create entrance/exit points for performers.
- Cyclorama: a large, seamless backdrop used to create the illusion of sky, depth, or different lighting effects, often made of white or light coloured fabric.
